OCT 20 - CHALLENGED TO ADVENTURE
Before we left our home this week a colleague fighting cancer challenged our family to view our future as an adventure. An adventure invites us to accept risks while being eager to engage in the unknown. This perspective resonated with our family and we have chosen to let this be our reality.
So far our adventure has tested our physical and mental capacities. Miles engaged in a three hour psychological evaluation (in which he KILLLED it with his brilliance) and has endured another surgery to place a port/line to receive chemo and a spinal tap to examine the cancer cells or as he says “kick the bad cells out”.
While we have been staying in Portland Miles kept insisting on visiting an REI. We couldn’t quite understand why, but knew we had to make it happen. After a long appointment yesterday he told the doctor “Well, I guess I will have to ask you. . . Can I rent on of the motorized scooters that are all over the city?” The doctor replies “Well, you could but you would need a helmet.” Miles quickly responded with “Yep, got that covered my parents said they are taking me to an REI and I know I can buy one there.”
That’s just what we did - and he and his father enjoyed themselves a little too much last night on the streets and forbidden sidewalks of Portland. Truly adventuring.
Tomorrow our adventure takes us to Seattle with immediate appointments to begin treatment.
May your adventures bring you closer together, even as they take you far away from home.” – Trenton Lee Stewart
